I don’t necessarily recommend this story due to its nature. However, this single sentence instead of an elaboration on the events is true to the bleak tone of this story. However, the story ended pretty much immediately after with just a final sentence about what followed. After spanning a few years of a descent into madness, Todd’s final snap at the end of the story was a long time coming. I also felt that the ending was rather abrupt. I imagine this mixed feeling is due to the dark content and nature of this story. At times I wanted to just stop reading it, but I also needed to know the ending. ![]() I enjoyed it, sure, but at the same time, I didn’t. However, I feel to a degree like I was forcing myself to read this story. It’s the mark of stunning writing that I couldn’t put this book down, and that it impacted me strongly. I want to say that how upset and anxious this story made me feel was a bad thing, but it isn’t really. It’s clear from early on in the story that they are irrevocably connected to each other, and that the ties binding them can’t be undone. As Todd becomes a reflection of Dussander, we also witness the two adopt similar coping mechanisms without knowing what the other is doing. We get to watch both characters unravel at the seams and their sinister coping mechanisms. As the story progresses, Todd changes from the typical All American Boy into a reflection of Dussander.Īs uncomfortable as this story made me, I admit it’s very well told. Kurt Dussander serves as a dark mentor, pulling Todd down into his sick and twisted ideology. Instead of the rise of a hero, this story is the rise of a monster, with all the conventional roles reversed. And as soon as we meet Dussander, we know his role. As soon as we meet Todd, we find out his objective. The pacing is pedal to the metal in this story. This was like watching a natural disaster: violent and disturbing, hope-shattering, but I couldn’t look away even when I wanted to. However, Apt Pupil runs full speed ahead into the darkest and most twisted parts of humanity, and doesn’t stop until it hits rock bottom.
